Baccalaureate National Exam 2021 June Services – Cooking

[1] When she was 16 years old, Ana Moreno watched buses of tourists arrive in her village. They came to see the wildlife in the Sierra Gorda Reserve, Mexico. “How is it possible that I don’t speak English?” She thought to herself. So, Ana went on to study tourism and learn English at university. Ana’s father had worked as a forest guard, and she accompanied him into the mountain on several occasions. Eventually, Ana achieved her goal to become a guide and lead tourists into the forest.

[2] Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ana is facing hard times and she is not leading tourists into the jungle this year. “It’s going to be really tough,” she says. “If we don’t have people coming, we won’t have income,” she adds. Her brother Joel and his wife Ellen founded a nonprofit organization that employs six people to patrol the mountain and protect the forest from loggers, or people who cut down trees for wood. Joel and Ellen are facing hard times too; they couldn’t keep to their promises and their guards have not been paid for three months.

[3] It is not just the Moreno family who has lost income: Tourism employs eighty people from the local community as guides, horse handlers, or drivers. Unfortunately, in the last few months, some of them have already returned to cutting and selling wood, which threatens both the forest and its wildlife. Tourism businesses like Ecotours have also lost a large amount of their revenue.

[4] Today, locals and ecotourism businesses are finding new ways to welcome tourists. Ecotours has brought alternative solutions to manage tourists in a way that minimizes the environmental impact and the risk of virus transmission. The business has already adopted small-scale outdoor recreation as a solution to large-group touristic activities in the time of the pandemic. Visitors to the jungle can explore the rainforest in small groups through guided tours. Similarly, Ana and her brother Joel designed virtual tours. “I hope it can save us this year,” says Ana. Thanks to these virtual tours, visitors enjoy watching wildlife in different ways.

[5] It may take a long time for ecotourism to return to normal. But in Mexico, forest communities are finding ways to adapt their ecotourism services to the constraints of the pandemic. In doing so, they provide both an alternative to large group trips and a means of preserving the environment.
